Oak Dining table

Design and construction of a dining table made of oak

Drawing inspiration from Brutalism and Organic Sculpture, this dining table explores the interplay between architectural mass, sculptural form, and the inherent character of wood. Both movements have played a significant role in shaping furniture and object design throughout the 20th century. The design is conceived as a statement piece, intended to establish a strong architectural presence within its surroundings. Its composition is defined by the tension between the substantial volume of the base and the slender, elongated tabletop, creating a considered balance between solidity and visual lightness. Brutalist principles inform the emphasis on mass, geometric structure, and the honest expression of material. These are reinterpreted through fluid curves, organic transitions, and an asymmetrical opening within the base, lending the piece a distinctive sculptural identity. The base is crafted from solid oak, with meticulous attention to the shaping of its curved surfaces and the expression of the wood’s natural grain and tonal variations. The tabletop, finished in natural oak veneer, maintains the material continuity of the composition while accentuating the contrast between the grounded, sculptural base and the refined horizontal plane above. The piece is finished with a matte, non-yellowing acrylic coating, selected to protect the surfaces while preserving the oak’s natural colour and appearance.
